Mariah Carey has the flu… Elton John named Time’s 2024 Icon of the Year… Movie happenings… Joe Burrow update… and Selena Gomez shows off her engagement ring

 

Mariah Carey only has 3 shows left on her Christmas Time tour, but will she make it? On Tuesday, while performing in Raleigh, NC, Mariah celebrated her song All I Want for Christmas is You returning to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She even had her 13-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe come out on stage to celebrate with her. But less than 24 hours later, things took an ugly turn. Just hours before she was set to take the stage in the Steel City, Mariah posted, “Pittsburgh, I am sorry to say, I’ve come down with the flu. It breaks my heart that I unfortunately have to cancel tonight’s show. I love you all so much.” It doesn’t sound like she’s rescheduling, either. But all the commenters on X have been very understanding. Her fan Patrick posted of photo of himself all dress up as a tin soldier. He just wanted to show off the outfit he was going to wear and hoped Mariah is doing okay. Her next show is supposed to happen tomorrow night in Newark.

While Donald Trump was named TIME’s Person of the Year, Elton John was named their Icon of the Year. In his interview, Elton talked about how he became sober after his close friend Ryan White passed away in 1990. Ryan was only 13 when he received a contaminated blood transfusion that gave him AIDS. That was in December of 1984. Doctors gave Ryan just six months to live, but he lived for 5 more years. During that time, he became a national figure in the fight against AIDS and got very close to Elton. When he died at the age of 18, Elton assessed his life and realized he needed to get sober. On July 29, 1990, Elton checked into rehab and he’s been sober ever since. He’s actually Eminem’s sponsor in AA! So that’s the background here, because also in the TIME article, Elton said that unlike the opinion of countless weed smokers who say it’s not addictive nor is it a gateway drug, Elton maintains that marijuana IS addictive and that it leads to other drugs. Not only that, Elton said, “Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

In casting news, Sony Pictures is planning to release 4 separate Beatles biopics, with each one focusing on one member of the band. Sam Mendes is set to direct all four. And now we may know who’s being cast as one of the Beatles, although we don’t know which one. While being interviewed about his movie Gladiator II, director Ridley Scott was asked if Paul Mescal might be involved in his next movie project, Ridley said, “Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go.” In other casting news, Disney is planning a live-action remake of Tangled, which will be directed by Michael Gracey — the man behind The Greatest Showman. Pretty much the minute this project was announced, Sabrina Carpenter’s fans jumped on social media to demand that she be cast as Rapunzel. In the cartoon version, Mandy Moore voiced Rapunzel and Zachary Levi voiced her love interest, Flynn Rider. Zachary told Entertainment Tonight that he thinks he and Mandy are too old to play their characters in the live version, although he thinks it would be fun if he and Mandy could play Rapunzel’s parents. His suggestion for the role of Flynn was Timothée Chalamet.

While Bengals QB Joe Burrow was on the road leading his team to victory over the Cowboys Monday night, someone broke into his home back in the Cincinnati area. The mother of the woman staying there called 911, and then the woman staying there called 911 herself. She identified herself as Olivia Ponton, an employee of Mr. Burrow who happened to be staying at his house. She left out the part about being a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and — quite possibly — Joe’s secret girlfriend. This had people speculating that Joe was cheating on his fiancée Olivia Holzmacher, who has been with him since college. While Joe and Olivia never confirmed their engagement, Pacman Jones said they were when he was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show last year. At the same time, Olivia was also spotted wearing what looked like an engagement ring. But that was then. The fact is, Joe and Olivia Holzmacher haven’t been seen together since she shared a picture of them in January. And this past summer, there were rumors that Joe was seeing Olivia Ponton, who may or may not be employed by him. Either way, it’s not looking like he cheated on his fiancée, but Joe is VERY upset that his personal life has been exposed like this.

Congratulations to Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco! She announced on her Instagram last night, “forever begins now,” showing off her gigantic marquise diamond engagement ring. In one of the carousel of photos that followed, it looks like Benny proposed during a picnic and kept it real with Taco Bell and champagne. The newly engaged Benny posted in the comments, “hey wait…that’s my wife.” And Taylor Swift offered, “Yes I will be the flower girl.” But have Selena and Benny actually been engaged for a while? Back in August, she was posting photos with heart emojis over THAT finger. Maybe they’ve been sitting on the engagement news for a few months so they could enjoy it privately and they’re just now willing to share it with the world.
