The 10 TV Shows of 2024… What to watch this weekend… One Direction update… ‘Dolly: An Original Musical’ is coming to Broadway… and Lizzo scores victory

Billboard got it wrong with the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century….but did Rolling Stone get it right with the Best TV Shows of 2024? Not a single one is from network TV, by the way. Because of the actors and writers strikes, there weren’t as many shows to choose from. But according to Rolling Stone, “Quality, if not quantity, is making a comeback.” And according to a bunch of their employees in an extremely long group email exchange, Rolling Stone says, “ Here are the series that stood about the rest over the last 12 months.”

  1. Somebody Somewhere (HBO)
  2. Shōgun (Hulu)
  3. Ripley (Netflix)
  4. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Prime)
  5. What We Do in the Shadows (FX)
  6. Shrinking (Apple TV+)
  7. Fantasmas (HBO)
  8. A Man on the Inside (Netflix)
  9. My Brilliant Friend (HBO)
  10. True Detective: Night Country (HBO)

If you’re hunkering down at home this weekend, here’s some fun stuff you can pop on the telly. Hallmark produced 32 brand new holiday movies this season and promised to debut brand new ones every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Tonight, it’s Private Princess Christmas, with spoiled Princess Violet of Wingravia being shipped off to a leadership boot camp in Colorado to fix her attitude problem and prove she’s worthy of becoming queen. Tomorrow night is the premiere of Sugarplummed. In this one, when Emily’s wish for a picture-perfect Christmas brings to life the main character from a made-for-TV holiday movie, she’s forced to reconsider what’s so special about the holidays. And then Sunday night, it’s Leah’s Perfect Gift. A Jewish woman prepares to celebrate her first Christmas with her boyfriend’s family, but is forced to reconsider what she really wants as traditions clash and the perfect holiday slips further away.

Another holiday special premieres tonight on Netflix. A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter premieres at 8pm Central. Sabrina will perform some covers as well songs from her holiday EP Fruitcake. Sabrina will be performing duets with special guests including Chappell Roan, Tyla, and Shania Twain, with special appearances by the likes of Cara Delevingne, Quinta Brunson, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele and Jillian Bell.

A source told Us Weekly that One Direction was in talks for a comeback performance before Liam Payne passed away. The source said even Zayn was interested in making this work. But now whatever plans that were being discussed have been put on hold. However, the source says a concert is still a possibility. The source told Us Weekly that losing Liam was a huge “wake-up call” for Harry, Niall, Louis and Zayn, because prior to this tragedy, “they kept in touch sporadically, but didn’t have close friendships at all.” The source said, “They’re all still mourning but are checking in on each other and feel closer than they have in years. It brought them back together.” And now there reportedly has been mention of getting together to perform a tribute to Liam.

Dolly Parton announced that she’s holding open auditions for Dolly: An Original Musical that’s being produced for Broadway. She’s looking for performers of all ages who can capture the spirit of her journey, and it doesn’t matter if you’re “an experienced theater professional or an undiscovered gem with that little special something.” Applicants must submit a one-minute video of themselves singing a Dolly song by Jan. 12, 2025. Meantime, Warner Bros. Discovery held an open casting call for their upcoming Harry Potter series, which starts filming this summer. They’ve reportedly auditioned 32K kids for the lead roles and the team is currently reviewing 5K audition tapes per day!!

Lizzo is still being sued by some of her former employees. A source close to her says Lizzo refuses to settle and will fight all charges against her. Lizzo did win a victory in court this week. Asha Daniels worked as a stylist on Lizzo’s Big Grrrl Big Tour. She’s suing Lizzo for racial and sexual harassment by members of Lizzo’s management team, unpaid overtime, and a hostile work environment. But a judge in California dismissed several of Asha’s claims in court this week because several of these alleged abuses occurred during the European leg of Lizzo’s tour, where US labor laws aren’t enforced.
