Box office weekend news… Kevin Costner film is being pulled… Mahomes’ tic-tac-toe gender reveal… Eminem’s number one album… and Katy Perry in crisis talks to save her album

Twisters opened in first place this weekend with $80.5M — about $30M more than analysts expected! And they will bask in the glory of that for exactly one week because Deadpool and Wolverine will take that top spot when it hits theaters this weekend. Despicable Me 4 fell to second in its third weekend, with another $23.8M. Third place went to Inside Out 2, with $12.8M. Now in its sixth weekend, this movie’s global total is almost $1.4B and quickly closing in on Frozen 2 to become the biggest animated movie of all time.

After several discussions, the decision has been made not to release Kevin Costner’s Horizon 2 in theaters Aug. 16. Since opening on June 28, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 has yet to cross the $30M mark here in the US. Globally, it’s earned just a tad over $30M. By pulling Chapter 2 indefinitely, the studio is hoping it will give people more time to see Chapter 1, which is now available on most VOD platforms, including Prime Video and Apple TV. They haven’t set a new release date for Chapter 2 just yet.

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes decided to do another gender reveal for their third — and Patrick says final — baby. Big sister Sterling and soon-to-be big brother Bronze toddled out toe a giant tic-tac-toe board out by their pool. Sterling did the honors of flipping around the squares to reveal that mommy and daddy are having another girl. Everyone under the sun is prediction they will name her Goldie.

After 12 consecutive weeks at No. 1, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has been dethroned by none other than Slim Shady. Eminem is enjoying his 11th No. 1 album with The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). It’s the largest week for any rap album in 2024, and first-week sales mark the biggest sales week in 2024 for a rap album. In its 13th week of release, The Tortured Poets Department slipped to No. 4.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom took their 3-year-old daughter Daisy to St. Tropez for a little family vacation. Sources say she’s using the time to reset mentally, spiritually and physically after reportedly having crisis talks to save her upcoming album, 143. After her first single Woman’s World was met with a ton of backlash, sources told the Daily Mail that Katy is “pointing the fingers at everyone but herself, but it’s her own fault.” First of all, she took heat for working with Dr. Luke, who is still tainted by his legal battle with Kesha, who accused him of sexual assault. Then when people actually heard the song, many slammed it for being unoriginal, infantile, and formulaic. The video for the single only made things worse. Critics called it cringe and misogynistic, but Katy said she was only trying to be sarcastic. The Daily Mail says Katy is “freaking out” and demanding that her team go back to the drawing board to save her album.
