Hizzle American Idol ratings are way down and they blame the competition
The ratings for American Idol are significantly down this year, and they blame it on the other singing competition shows that are “feeding off of their talent pool and audience”.
This season of American Idol has only brought in 18.9 million viewers compared to 24.9 mil last year. Idol’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe complained that The Voice and X-Factor are overloading America with singing competitions and that sharing a network with X-Factor makes it feel like there are two seasons of Idol on Fox. He took a swipe at both of the shows, saying that The Voice is “is fed by talent that hasn’t quite made it or is trying to come back” and that “it’s obvious that X Factor didn’t really know what it wanted to do.” But he says that he isn’t worried about the mediocre competition because American Idol has been going strong for 11 years, and it’s still America’s #1 show.

I personally quit watching because I thought the top few last year were lame. It's annoying to get invested in true talent and then see mediocrity win.
